Runaway AP Style Questions

For our blog post this week in my AP English course, we are supposed to write 7 AP Style Questions on our author we chose. My author is Alice Munro and I chose the following piece Runaway which is a series of different stories. Here is the first story:

(I included the link because it was very long to copy & paste)

Here are the 7 AP Style multiple choice questions I came up with after reading:

1)      Does the author use a symbol of clothing in this piece? If so, what is the significance?

a.       Yes, the author uses a symbol of clothing to let the characters express themselves and show unique personality traits.

b.       No, the author does not use a symbol of clothing in this piece, the piece is more focused on setting.

c.       Yes, the author uses a symbol of clothing primarily to show the characters experiences are, and how they look at the reality of their lives.

d.       No, the author does not focus on symbols in this piece at all, the main purpose In this piece is to focus on personification and syntax.

The answer to number 1 is C. We can go ahead and mark B and D out because they are both saying “NO” but the answer is yes there is symbolism. Although the answers are similar C fits the piece better. For instance, Clara wears Sylvia’s clothes but claims that they do not “fit” her, meaning they do not show her experiences or the reality of her life. Her own clothes show memories of when she wore them and can see the reality that these clothes are the clothes she wore when being abused and shows the truly reality of her life. It doesn’t really let her express herself as said in A, A is not as easily backed up.

2)      Why is the title of this piece “Runaway”?

a.       The protagonist runs away from her family and community problems.

b.       The protagonist runs away from the orphanage she was raised in.

c.       Runaway is not taken literal instead it is contradicting because it is discussing how to protagonist comes to the place she belongs.

d.       The antagonist fleeing from his abusive behaviors.

The answer to number 2 is A. B cannot be correct because there is no orphanage mentioned in this piece. C is not correct because the last sentence reveals that she does not go back she leaves instead so it is not contradicting. Then D the antagonist is not focused on in this piece, so he does not run away. Leaving A as the best choice because of her relationship she is trying to escape from.

3)      What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

a.       To inform the reader of the setting

b.       To entertain the reader with thoughts from Carla

c.       To confuse the reader by adding details of Jamieson

d.      To inform the reader of the setting and thoughts of Carla

The answer to number 3 is D. A could be correct, but there is more to it than just the setting. B should be crossed out because it is not to entertain the reader. C is not correct because no piece is intending to confuse readers. D is correct because it is informing the reader of setting and thoughts of Carla.

4)      The relationship between Carla and Sylvia is explained primarily using which of the following?

a.       The dialogue between the two of them.

b.       The symbols of clothing

c.       The setting of Carla’s home

d.       The tone of the entire piece

The answer to number 4 is A. A reader may think B is correct because the symbol of clothing is important, but it is not a huge factor between their relationship. C has nothing to do with anything, it’s just where her house is placed. D is too broad to answer the questions, so the dialogue is the most clear answer.

5)      What would be the most obvious theme for the book as a whole?

a.       In fairytale stories people run away, but we can’t do that in our real lives.

b.       Females are more prone to run away from their issues than men.

c.       Our neighbors have a large influence on our life.

d.      There are various ways to runaway from aspects of our life.

The answer to number 5 is D. This question I think is a little more tricky because I think that they all could be argued in a way. C because Sylvia was Carla’s neighbor and she had a big influence on her decision to run away. B because females are most focused on in the story. And A because this book is like 3 fairytales combined. But A should be crossed out because we can still runaway in real life. B should be crossed out because we can’t claim women to run away more with real facts, if I had to say I think men run away from their problems more and girls cling to them. C should be crossed out because my neighbor really doesn’t have an influence on my life, so this just may be true for this story. Where D stands out most because there were many ways to run away in the story and the three stories making up the book all have various ways to run away.

6)      What is one of the symbols in the piece?

a.       Clothes affecting relationships.

b.      Traveling or transporting into one’s true self.

c.       Fighting causes one to run away.

d.       Home is not a place you need to run away from.

The answer to number 6 is B. A could be considered but clothing doesn’t affect relationships, like I said earlier it enhances the reality of their lives. C is not right because they don’t really fight besides her abuse, she didn’t fight back only he fought. D is not correct because in Carla’s case her home was not a home in was more of a living Hell of abuse. So B her traveling and running away gave her room to grow and gain her confidence back to be herself that she had lost through the years

7)      Which of the following best describes the authors purpose in the last sentence?

a.       To prove that women will eventually give in and cannot survive on their own without a man.

b.      To show that she is confident with her decision and can survive on her own without a man.

c.       To emphasize that women are stronger and can-do things on their own.

d.       To show that she is a weak person for running back in the end.

The answer to number 7 is B. A is not correct to the piece because she does not give in and it is too broad when it says “women” so cross that out. C is correct but its also to broad saying “women.” D is not true because she does not run back so cross that out. So B makes the most sense because it says “she” to show back to the characters in the text and it is true because she does not run back.
